Sublingual absorption means a substance passes through the tissue under the tongue directly into the bloodstream, bypassing digestion. It works well for some compounds, particularly small water-soluble molecules.

Vitamin D is not one of those. It is a fat-soluble molecule that is normally absorbed in the small intestine alongside dietary fat, packaged into chylomicrons and carried through the lymphatic system. That pathway requires fat and requires digestion. A spray held under the tongue for a few seconds is mostly swallowed and absorbed the ordinary way regardless of the label.

So sprays work, in the sense that the vitamin gets in. The sublingual mechanism is largely marketing, and it is the reason sprays often skip the fat that actually helps.

WHY DOES THE CARRIER MATTER MORE THAN THE FORMAT?

Because fat is the variable with the strongest evidence behind it.

More than most people expect, because a spray has requirements a dropper does not.

It has to atomise through a nozzle, stay mixed rather than separating, taste acceptable in the mouth, and resist microbial growth in a water-based solution. That typically means emulsifiers, flavourings, sweeteners such as xylitol or sucralose, and preservatives.

None of that is dangerous. It is simply a longer ingredient list for the same 2,000 IU, and every item on it is there to make the delivery mechanism work rather than to do anything for you.

Sprays deliver a fixed dose per actuation, which is convenient. Drops let you adjust, which matters if you want 1,000 IU some days and 2,000 on others, or if you are dosing for body size.

Drops are also easier to take with food, since you can put them straight into or onto something you are already eating. A spray is designed to go in your mouth on its own, which tends to mean without fat.
