WHY VITAMIN D AND SLEEP ARE LINKED
Three mechanisms connect them.
Melatonin synthesis. Vitamin D receptors sit directly in the pineal gland, which produces melatonin, the hormone that signals the body to wind down for sleep.* Research has explored whether adequate vitamin D levels support normal melatonin production, and observational studies consistently find correlations between vitamin D status and markers of healthy circadian rhythm.*
Serotonin pathways. Vitamin D plays a role in the synthesis of serotonin.* Serotonin is a direct biochemical precursor to melatonin and is also tied to mood and the ease of winding down at night.* When vitamin D is chronically low, upstream synthesis steps that feed both serotonin and melatonin can be affected.*
Inflammation. Low vitamin D levels are consistently associated in observational research with higher levels of inflammatory markers.* Chronic low-grade inflammation has been shown to disrupt sleep architecture, particularly the deep, restorative slow-wave stages.* This is one mechanism researchers think helps explain why sleep quality and vitamin D status tend to track together in population studies.*
WHAT THE RESEARCH SHOWS
The strongest data is from observational studies. A 2018 meta-analysis published in Nutrients pooled data from 9 studies and 9,397 participants. It found that people with vitamin D deficiency had a significantly increased risk of sleep disorders overall (odds ratio 1.50), and in subgroup analyses, of poor sleep quality (OR 1.59), short sleep duration (OR 1.74), and daytime sleepiness (OR 1.36).*
One of the larger primary studies behind the picture is a 2015 cross-sectional analysis by Bertisch and colleagues at Harvard, published in Sleep. Drawing on 1,721 adults from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, it found that lower 25(OH)D was associated with shorter actigraphy-measured sleep duration and reduced sleep continuity.*
Intervention studies, where researchers gave participants vitamin D and measured sleep changes, show more mixed results. Some trials report improvements in self-reported sleep quality, particularly in people who were deficient at baseline.* Others find no significant effect in people who already had sufficient levels. The pattern is consistent with a deficiency-correction model: if vitamin D status is already adequate, adding more doesn't change much.
WHAT THIS MEANS IN PRACTICE
If you sleep seven or eight hours and still wake up unrested, vitamin D status is one of the simpler variables to rule out. It won't explain every case of bad sleep, and it doesn't replace the basics: limiting caffeine, controlling light exposure, managing stress. But it is rarely checked on a standard physical, and a substantial share of adults are running below sufficient.
A 25-hydroxy vitamin D blood test is a standard panel any doctor can order. Under Endocrine Society cutoffs, levels below 20 ng/mL (50 nmol/L) are considered deficient and 20-29 ng/mL is insufficient. If yours come back low, consistent daily supplementation over 8 to 12 weeks is the standard approach to bringing levels into range.* Whether that changes the sleep picture is something to track over time.
