What the Research Says About Vitamin D and Hair Loss
Roughly half of people with several common types of hair loss are low on vitamin D. That is a real and repeated finding. What it means is more complicated, and worth getting right.

This article reviews published research on vitamin D and hair loss. It is reference material, not medical advice, and it is not a recommendation to take vitamin D for hair loss. No dietary supplement treats hair loss. Hair loss has many causes, and diagnosing it is something to do with a clinician rather than an article.

Low vitamin D is commonly found alongside several types of hair loss, but that is an observed association rather than evidence that supplementing helps. Low vitamin D is found in roughly half of people with several common types of hair loss. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis found vitamin D deficiency in 53.51% of people with telogen effluvium, 51.94% with alopecia areata, 50.38% with female pattern hair loss, and 47.38% with male androgenetic alopecia. Vitamin D receptors are present in hair follicles and play a role in the hair growth cycle.* What this research does not establish is that low vitamin D causes hair loss, or that supplementing reverses it.

WHAT THE NUMBERS ACTUALLY SAY

The most useful single source here is a 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis in Frontiers in Nutrition, which pooled studies on vitamin D deficiency across hair loss types.

WHERE THE LINK IS STRONGEST, AND WHERE IT ISN'T

This is the part most articles flatten, and it matters.

The same meta-analysis calculated odds ratios comparing people with hair loss against controls. For female pattern hair loss, the pooled odds ratio for vitamin D deficiency was 5.24, with a mean vitamin D difference of 15.67 ng/mL lower than controls. For alopecia areata, the odds ratio was 2.84, with a mean difference of 8.20 ng/mL.

But for male androgenetic alopecia, while the odds ratio appeared high at 4.42, the confidence interval ranged from 0.53 to 36.61, which crosses 1 and means the result was not statistically significant. The mean difference in vitamin D levels was only 2.19 ng/mL.

So the honest summary: the association is substantial in female pattern hair loss, alopecia areata, and telogen effluvium. In common male pattern baldness, the evidence is much weaker. Any article treating these as one story is glossing over the actual data.

WHY THERE IS A BIOLOGICAL LINK AT ALL

Hair follicles carry vitamin D receptors, and reviews describe this receptor expression in the outer root sheath, the hair bulb, and the sebaceous glands, contributing to the regulation of hair cycling.*

The clearest evidence for the receptor's importance comes from a rare genetic condition: hereditary vitamin D resistant rickets, caused by mutations in the vitamin D receptor, features alopecia as a recognized clinical sign. Research notes that this points to the receptor playing a crucial role in normal hair cycling.

That establishes the receptor matters. It does not establish that supplementing an adult with mildly low levels changes their hair.

WHAT THIS DOESN'T SHOW

Three limits worth holding onto.

  1. Direction is unresolved. Low vitamin D might contribute to hair loss, or the circumstances surrounding hair loss might contribute to low vitamin D, or a third factor might drive both. Cross-sectional data cannot separate these.
  2. Intervention evidence is thin. Most of this research measures vitamin D levels in people who already have hair loss. There is far less high-quality randomized data on whether supplementing changes outcomes.
  3. Hair loss has many causes. Iron status, thyroid function, hormonal changes, illness, stress, medications, and genetics all matter. Vitamin D is one line on a long list.

WHAT'S ACTUALLY WORTH DOING

The reasonable steps are unglamorous.

  1. See a clinician about the hair loss itself. Telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, and pattern hair loss are different conditions with different management. Which one you have matters more than any single nutrient.
  2. Ask for the relevant blood work. Vitamin D is measured as serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, or 25(OH)D. Ferritin and thyroid function are commonly checked alongside it for exactly this reason.
  3. Treat vitamin D as one variable, not the answer. Being low is common generally and worth knowing about regardless. It is not a hair loss treatment.

The finding that around half of people with several hair loss types are low on vitamin D is real and repeated. The leap from there to "vitamin D fixes hair loss" is one the research has not made.
