DOES WEEKLY DOSING RAISE YOUR LEVELS AS WELL AS DAILY?

Broadly, yes. If the only question is whether your 25-hydroxyvitamin D number goes up, spacing the same total amount across a week will get you there.

Which is exactly why the dosing question got treated as settled for a long time. Same total, same blood number, therefore same thing.

Then researchers started separating trials by dosing schedule and looking at what actually happened to people, rather than what happened to their lab values.

WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND ON DAILY VS INTERMITTENT DOSING

The largest analysis of this kind pooled individual data from 25 controlled trials covering about 11,000 people, published in the BMJ in 2017. It found a benefit in participants given vitamin D daily or weekly without any large one-off doses, and no benefit in those who received the large doses.

A later and larger analysis of 42 trials covering roughly 47,000 people split the schedules apart further. Daily dosing showed a clear effect. Weekly did not reach significance. Monthly and less frequent did not either.

So the ranking is not daily versus everything else. It looks more like a gradient, where the more you space the dose out, the more the benefit thins.

WHY LARGE INFREQUENT DOSES BEHAVE DIFFERENTLY

The working explanation is that your body responds to a flood differently than to a trickle.

Vitamin D is converted into its active form and then broken down again by enzymes that are themselves regulated by how much vitamin D is around. Push a large amount through at once and you appear to ramp up the disposal machinery along with it. The blood test still records the rise. The tissues that use it may not see the same benefit.

A steady daily intake keeps the system in a range it is built for, which is closer to what sun exposure would produce anyway. Nobody gets a month of sunlight in one afternoon.

WHAT ABOUT 50,000 IU ONCE A WEEK?
